¿Es la Virgen María madre de Dios?

Si la Virgen María es madre de Jesucristo, persona divina, se puede afirmar que es madre de Dios, pues Jesucristo es a la vez verdadero hombre y verdadero Dios, pero es una sola persona de carácter divino.

En el Nuevo Testamento encontramos confirmación de esto: Así en San Lucas,1,31-32, leemos que el ángel le dice a la Virgen María: "...y concebirás en tu seno y darás a luz un hijo, a quien pondrás por nombre Jesús. Será grande y llamado Hijo del Altísimo ...."

Y aún más claramente en San Lucas,1, 43: dice Santa Isabel a la Virgen:"¿De dónde a mí, que la madre de mi Señor venga a mí?" Ahora bien si llama a la Virgen "madre de mi Señor" es lo mismo que llamarla "madre de Dios", pues en la tradición judía "Señor" se usaba para referirse a Dios.

El concilio de Éfeso en el año 431, mucho antes de que apareciera el Protestantismo, que luego negó las prerrogativas de la Virgen, definió como dogma de fe que la Virgen María es "Madre de Dios". Y ya sabemos que los concilios (válidos) gozan de la asistencia del Espíritu Santo, es decir son infalibles.
