That is to say that “heat and cold do not exist, cold and hot only exist for you”: What is real is that if cold and hot exist for you it is because, objectively, cold and heat exist outside.
Do evil and good exist objectively? All of us can see examples of both in everyday’s life. Perhaps what is meant sometimes with such a sentence is that the only thing that is really important for us is what affects us personally. Yet, when it is cold, we take shelter and this way cold doesn’t affect us. If we think that cold doesn’t exist, we don’t look for shelter and we realize that it is really cold when we feel it and maybe we get sick.
To say that evil doesn’t exist is the same as to be unclothed when we face it and risk feeling the evil in ourselves, in our own person. Furthermore: if one says, for instance: “It is true that there are people, who kill, but insofar they don’t kill me, everything is O.K.!” one is already adopting an attitude of selfishness, “if I’m o.k., I don’t give a dime for the others!” This is a morally bad attitude, lacking love for one’s neighbour.
Somehow, to agree with such sentence means to accept evil inside ourselves, just because by acting in such a pitiless way with regard to one’s neighbor, one gets already affected in fact by moral evil.
Another meaning of such sentence would be: “everything is allowed to me, for evil doesn’t objectively exist, and I only have to worry about the things that are advisable for me”. Let’s see the practical applications of such an attitude: “there is nothing that forbids me to kill, it only depends on whether I see an advantage in it or not”, “it isn’t bad in itself to steal my neighbor’s wife, it only matters whether I am able to, if I like her”; “it isn’t bad in itself to steal, it only depends on whether I am caught or not”. If objective evil doesn’t exist, then we open the way to ferocious, selfish and individualistic morals which transform society into a jungle.
On the other hand, such sentence suggests perhaps an amoral and atheistic conception of life: If God exists, He is the absolute and objective Good. To separate from him is the absolute evil. If, after our life, a judgment awaits us for eternal salvation or condemnation, it means that absolute good and absolute evil also exist for every one of us, they will depend on our union with or our separation from the objective and absolute Good which is God.
The sentence we are considering is false as well: Light and darkness exist outside of me and, knowing that they exist, I try to be in the light and to distance myself from darkness. In the same way, knowing that Evil and Good exist outside of me, as experience and faith show us, I must try to avoid the darkness of evil and to approach the light of good and so I shall have the Good for me and the Good - God - inside me and I shall avoid evil nesting inside me.
